an on-call general practitioner (gp) provides medical care for patients outside routine clinic hours or when covering for another doctor. typical duties include:

• providing urgent medical consultations in person, by telephone, or via telemedicine.

• determining whether a patient can be treated in the community or requires referral to the emergency department or hospital.

• providing clear safety-net advice, including when patients should seek further medical attention.
• ensuring effective handover of outstanding clinical issues to the patient's usual gp or the next on-call clinician.
